We're throwing it back to the 80s with this high-protein chicken pasta recipe, when pasta was king, vodka was flowing, and creamy sauces ruled the dinner table. Enter: Chicken Vodka Pasta—a dish that’s equal parts nostalgia, indulgence, and "should I be drinking this sauce straight from the pan?"
The secret? Vodka. It’s not just for questionable nightclub choices—it actually enhances the flavours of the tomato sauce, making it richer, silkier, and more complex. Combine that with juicy chicken, crispy bacon, and a luxurious creamy tomato sauce, and you've got a pasta dish that feels fancy but takes less than 30 minutes to make.
And because we’re all about balance, this is a high protein chicken pasta recipe, packing 62g of protein per serving—so you can feel virtuous while face-planting into a bowl of carbs. It’s perfect for weeknight dinners, meal prep, or impressing a date (because nothing says romance like a pasta sauce-stained shirt).
So, grab your vodka (for the recipe… mostly), and let’s get cooking!
What is Chicken Vodka Pasta?
Chicken vodka pasta is an Italian-American classic that combines juicy chicken, smoky bacon, and a rich tomato-cream sauce, all tied together with a splash of vodka. The vodka helps balance the acidity of the tomatoes and brings out a deeper, more complex flavour.
Typically served with penne or rigatoni, the pasta holds onto every drop of that silky sauce. With high-protein chicken as the star, this dish is both hearty and indulgent—perfect for anyone who wants to enjoy a creamy pasta dish without skimping on nutrition.
Chicken Vodka Pasta Main Ingredients
Chicken breasts: The star of the show, providing a high-protein, lean meat that's both versatile and delicious.
Smoked bacon medallions: These add a depth of flavour with their smokiness, complementing the chicken beautifully.
Vodka: A key ingredient that lends a unique taste and helps to emulsify the sauce, making it silky and rich.
Chopped tomatoes: They provide the acidic brightness that balances the creaminess of the sauce.
Half-fat crème fraîche: Offers a lighter alternative to heavy cream, adding a tangy richness without the guilt.

Total Time:35 mins
Yield:41x
Ingredients
UnitsScale
1 tbsp olive oil
600gchicken breasts, chopped
150gsmoked bacon medallions, chopped
1 medium onion, finely chopped
5ggarlic, finely chopped
100mlvodka
400g chopped tomatoes
1/4 tsp salt
120mlhalf-fat crème fraîche
Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, to serve
Fresh basil leaves, for garnish
Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste
Instructions
Heat the olive oil in a large pan on a high heat and fry the chicken for a few minutes to get some colour on it. Remove and set aside.
Reduce the heat to medium and add the bacon and onion.
Cook these for about 5-10 minutes to really allow them to release lots of flavour and to get the bacon to crisp up.
Add the garlic and fry for a further 30 seconds.
Add vodka and cook it for about 2-3 minutes. This is to allow the alcohol to burn off.
Return the chicken to the pan and add the chopped tomatoes and salt.
Cover and simmer for 10 minutes with the lid on. Then remove the lid and simmer for another 5 minutes.
Add the basil and crème fraiche, a splash of pasta water if needed stir through and serve.

To Store
This high-protein chicken pasta recipe keeps well in the fridge in an air-tight container.
To Reheat
Place the dish in the microwave, cover and zap until fully heated throughout.
To Freeze
In my opinion, it's never great to freeze cooked pasta. The sauce freezes fine, just cook the pasta when you're ready to eat it fresh.
FAQs
Can I substitute the vodka in the recipe?
Vodka plays a unique role in this recipe, adding a slight edge to the sauce and enhancing the overall flavour profile. If you prefer not to use alcohol, you can substitute it with an equal amount of chicken stock or water, though the final taste will differ slightly. The alcohol in the vodka does cook off, leaving minimal residual alcohol content, only its subtle flavour notes.
Is there a vegetarian alternative to this recipe?
For a vegetarian version, replace the chicken and bacon with a high-protein plant-based substitute, such as tofu or a meat-free chicken and bacon alternative. Adjust the cooking times accordingly, as plant-based proteins often require less cooking time than their meat counterparts. This substitution allows vegetarians to enjoy the same rich flavours and textures without compromising on protein content.
What side dishes pair well with this pasta?
A crisp, green salad dressed with a light vinaigrette complements the richness of the pasta perfectly, adding a refreshing element to your meal. For a heartier accompaniment, consider serving steamed or roasted vegetables, such as asparagus, broccoli, or peppers, to add colour and nutritional balance to your plate.
Is this dish really high in protein?
Yep! With 62g of protein per serving, this is muscle food disguised as comfort food.
