This Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo is exactly the sort of dinner I love creating: loads of protein, plenty of sauce, normal supermarket ingredients and only one main pan to deal with afterwards.

Juicy chicken breast is coated in smoked paprika and garlic before being browned and combined with sweet peppers, cherry tomatoes and orzo. Everything then cooks in chicken stock and BBQ sauce before light cream cheese and cheddar turn it gloriously creamy.

Overhead bowl of creamy BBQ chicken orzo with peppers, melted cheddar and fresh parsley.

Each generous serving provides approximately 620 calories and 56 g of protein, with lean chicken breast doing most of the protein heavy lifting. You’ll need a large deep frying pan or sauté pan, and the whole thing takes around 35 minutes from chopping board to dinner table.

It has similar easy one-pan appeal to my Creamy Cheesy Chicken Fajita Orzo, but this version swaps the Mexican spices for smoky, sweet BBQ flavours.

It’s ideal for busy weeknights, family dinners and meal prep, particularly when you want something that feels like proper comfort food while still helping you hit your protein target.

Why you’ll love this high-protein recipe

Creamy BBQ chicken orzo in a bowl with tender chicken, peppers, cheddar and parsley.

  • A whopping 56 g of protein per serving. Chicken breast, cream cheese and cheddar combine to make this a seriously satisfying dinner.
  • Everything comes together in one pan. Apart from the bowl you season the chicken in, washing-up is pleasingly uneventful.
  • Ready in around 35 minutes. Very useful when everyone has suddenly become ravenous at precisely 5:47pm.
  • Proper comfort food portions. At around 620 calories per serving, you get a substantial bowl rather than six pieces of chicken arranged artistically beside a lettuce leaf.
  • Family-friendly flavours. BBQ sauce, cheese and chicken aren't exactly a hard sell. You can also choose a mild, smoky or spicy BBQ sauce depending on your crowd.
  • Fantastic for creamy-orzo fans. If my Marry Me Chicken Orzo is already on regular rotation, this gives you another high-protein version to throw into the mix.

Key Ingredients

Ingredients for creamy BBQ chicken orzo with chicken, orzo, peppers, tomatoes, cheese and BBQ sauce.

Chicken Breast. The main protein source and the reason we can squeeze an impressive 56 g of protein into each portion. Browning it separately first gives you much better colour and flavour while helping prevent the chicken from drying out.

Orzo. It might look suspiciously like rice, but it’s actually tiny pasta. As it cooks directly in the stock it releases starch, naturally thickening everything into that glorious creamy consistency.

BBQ Sauce. This does a lot of work for one ingredient, bringing sweetness, smokiness, acidity and seasoning. Use your favourite variety because the flavour really comes through.

If BBQ chicken is very much your thing, my Air Fryer Hunter’s Chicken takes that same chicken-BBQ-cheese combination in an entirely different direction.

Light Cream Cheese. The shortcut to a silky sauce without needing to pour in loads of double cream. Add it over a low heat so it melts smoothly into the stock.

Reduced-Fat Mature Cheddar. Mature cheddar means you can get plenty of cheesy flavour without needing mountains of it. Half gets stirred through the orzo and the rest melts over the top.

Red and Yellow Peppers. They bring sweetness, colour and a bit of texture while also making the pan look approximately 74% more exciting.

Cherry Tomatoes. These soften and release their juices into the sauce, balancing the sweetness of the BBQ sauce with a little freshness and acidity.

Smoked Paprika. Reinforces the smoky BBQ flavour without making the dish hot, so it works particularly well for family dinners.

How to Make Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo

Add the diced chicken breast to a bowl, then sprinkle over the smoked paprika, garlic granules, salt and black pepper.

Toss everything together until the chicken is evenly coated in the seasoning. Getting it properly covered now means more flavour in every bite rather than one rogue paprika-loaded chunk.

Heat the olive oil in a large, deep frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 4–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until lightly golden. It doesn’t need to be completely cooked through yet. Transfer it to a plate and set aside.

Add the diced red onion, red pepper and yellow pepper to the same pan. Cook for 4–5 minutes until they begin to soften, scraping up any tasty browned bits left behind by the chicken. Stir in the cherry tomatoes and cook for another 2 minutes.

Pour in the dried orzo and chicken stock, then add the BBQ sauce. Stir everything together well and bring to a gentle simmer.

Simmer for 8–10 minutes, stirring regularly, until the orzo begins to soften and the sauce thickens. Keep an eye on it because orzo has an impressive ability to glue itself to the bottom of a pan the second you look away.

Add the browned chicken and any resting juices back to the pan. Cook for another 3–5 minutes until the chicken is cooked through and the orzo is tender. Add a splash of water or stock if the mixture becomes too thick.

Reduce the heat to low and stir through the light cream cheese until completely melted. Add half of the grated cheddar and stir again until you have a thick, creamy BBQ sauce coating the chicken and orzo.

Scatter over the remaining cheddar, cover the pan for 1–2 minutes and let the cheese melt. Finish with chopped fresh parsley, if using, then spoon into bowls and serve while gloriously creamy and hot.

Serving & storage

Four portions of creamy BBQ chicken orzo in glass meal prep containers with parsley and cheese.

Keeping Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo fresh for later is straightforward, making this a handy option for meal prep as well as tonight's dinner.

To Store

Allow leftovers to cool before transferring them to an airtight container.

Keep refrigerated for up to 3 days. The orzo will continue absorbing some of the sauce as it sits, so don't panic when tomorrow's portion looks thicker than it did straight from the pan.

To Reheat

Reheat thoroughly in the microwave until piping hot throughout, stirring halfway through.

Add a splash of chicken stock, water or milk before reheating to loosen the sauce and bring back that creamy consistency.

You can also reheat it gently in a covered frying pan over a low-medium heat, stirring regularly.

To Freeze

Yes, Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo can be frozen.

Cool completely, divide into individual airtight containers and freeze for up to 3 months.

Defrost overnight in the fridge before reheating. The sauce may initially look slightly thicker after freezing, but a splash of stock or milk and a good stir normally sorts it right out.

Serving Suggestions

This is already a complete meal, so you don't really need to add anything.

If you fancy bulking things out further, try:

  • Steamed broccoli or tenderstem broccoli.
  • Green beans or peas.
  • A simple mixed salad.
  • Roasted courgette or other vegetables.
  • Extra fresh cherry tomatoes and parsley on top for a fresher finish.

For another substantial chicken dinner that doesn't require much kitchen drama, my Chicken & Chorizo Pasta is another great one for hungry households.

This Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo combines smoky chicken, sweet peppers and tender orzo in a rich BBQ and cream cheese sauce, finished with melted mature cheddar.

  • Total Time: 35 mins
  • Yield: 4 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 500g chicken breast, cut into bite-sized pieces
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp garlic granules
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 1 red onion, finely diced
  • 1 red pepper, diced
  • 1 yellow pepper, diced
  • 250g cherry tomatoes, halved
  • 250g dried orzo
  • 650ml chicken stock
  • 100g BBQ sauce
  • 100g light cream cheese
  • 60g reduced-fat mature cheddar, grated
  • 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley, optional

Instructions

Add the chicken to a bowl and season with the smoked paprika, garlic granules, salt and black pepper.

Heat the olive oil in a large, deep frying pan over a medium-high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 4–5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned. It doesn’t need to be completely cooked through at this stage. Transfer to a plate.

Add the red onion and peppers to the same pan. Cook for 4–5 minutes until beginning to soften, then stir in the cherry tomatoes and cook for another 2 minutes.

Add the orzo, chicken stock and BBQ sauce. Stir well, bring to a gentle simmer and cook for 8–10 minutes, stirring regularly so the orzo doesn’t stick.

Return the chicken and any resting juices to the pan. Continue cooking for 3–5 minutes, until the chicken is cooked through and the orzo is tender. Add a splash of water or stock if the mixture becomes too thick.

Reduce the heat to low and stir through the light cream cheese until completely melted and creamy.

Stir through half of the grated cheddar. Scatter the remaining cheddar over the top, cover for 1–2 minutes until melted, then finish with parsley if using. Serve immediately.

Variations & tips

Close-up of creamy BBQ chicken orzo topped with grated cheddar and fresh parsley.

  • Turn up the protein even further. Increase the chicken breast to 600 g if you're feeding particularly hungry people or trying to push each portion even higher in protein. You may need an extra splash of stock while the orzo cooks.
  • Use leftover cooked chicken. Skip the initial browning stage and stir shredded cooked chicken through during the final few minutes. It's an excellent way to rescue that lonely roast chicken lurking in the fridge.
  • Make it spicy. Add chilli flakes, diced jalapeños or use a hot BBQ sauce. For children, stick with a sweeter mild BBQ sauce and let adults add chilli afterwards. Diplomatic dinner negotiations successfully avoided.
  • Don't completely cook the chicken initially. You're only looking for colour during the first fry. It finishes cooking once returned to the orzo, which helps keep it tender rather than turning it into small seasoned doorstops.
  • Stir the orzo regularly. Orzo loves attaching itself to the bottom of pans when nobody is looking. Give it a stir every couple of minutes and add a splash more stock if things get too thick before the pasta is tender.
  • Take the heat down before adding cream cheese. High heat can make creamy sauces separate. Turn the hob low, stir the cream cheese through gradually and you'll get a much smoother finish.

FAQ

Can I make Creamy BBQ Chicken Orzo with chicken thighs?

Absolutely. Boneless, skinless chicken thighs work really well and stay particularly juicy. They'll be slightly higher in calories and fat than chicken breast, so bear that in mind if you're tracking your macros.

Can I use a lower-sugar BBQ sauce?

Yes. A reduced-sugar or lower-calorie BBQ sauce works perfectly and can reduce the overall calories and sugar slightly. Just choose one you genuinely like because BBQ sauce is one of the dominant flavours here.

Why has my BBQ chicken orzo become too thick?

Orzo absorbs liquid extremely efficiently and continues thickening as it rests. Simply stir through a splash of chicken stock or hot water until you reach your preferred consistency.

How can I make this even higher in protein?

Add another 100–150 g chicken breast, or stir through a little extra light cream cheese. You could also serve it with high-protein vegetables such as peas or edamame if you want to boost the overall meal further.
