This high-protein Air Fryer Chicken Kiev gives you juicy chicken breast, crisp golden panko and a molten garlic parsley butter centre without deep frying or causing chaos with a pan of oil. It’s a lighter, protein-packed take on the classic comfort dinner, perfect for busy weeknights and fakeaway-style meals.
Air Fryer Chicken Kiev is basically the dinner equivalent of cutting into a present and finding garlic butter inside. Joyful. Slightly dramatic. Very worth it.
This version uses lean chicken breast as the main protein source, stuffed with garlicky parsley butter, coated in crisp panko breadcrumbs, then cooked in the air fryer until golden.
You still get the crunchy coating and the glorious buttery middle, but without deep frying or making your kitchen smell like a chip shop changing room.
Each serving comes in at 53g protein and around 500 calories, depending on how much flour and breadcrumb coating sticks to the chicken.
You’ll need an air fryer, a rolling pin or meat mallet, and ideally the emotional strength to wait five minutes before cutting into it. That resting time matters. Garlic butter leakage is delicious, but we’d rather keep most of it inside the chicken, not recreate a buttery crime scene on the chopping board.
Why you’ll love this high-protein recipe
Packed with around 43g protein per serving, mostly from lean chicken breast.
Crispy without deep frying, thanks to panko breadcrumbs and the air fryer doing the heavy lifting.
Feels like proper comfort food, not sad “healthy food” that makes you question your life choices.
Great for family dinners, especially with mash, vegetables, wedges or salad.
Uses simple UK supermarket ingredients, no mysterious powders or specialist aisle treasure hunts.
A lighter fakeaway-style option, ideal if you love crispy chicken dinners but still want to hit your protein target. For more ideas like this, try these high-protein fakeaway recipes.
Key Ingredients
Chicken Breast. The high-protein hero of the recipe. It’s lean, filling and works brilliantly when butterflied and stuffed. Give it a gentle bash so it cooks evenly and wraps snugly around the filling.
Butter. This is where the classic Kiev magic happens. You only need enough to create that rich garlic centre, not enough to waterproof a driveway.
Garlic. Three cloves bring proper flavour to the filling. Fresh garlic is best here because it gives that bold, punchy Kiev flavour.
Fresh Parsley. Bright, herby and essential for balancing the richness of the butter. It also makes the filling look like you know what you’re doing, which is always a bonus.
Panko Breadcrumbs. These give the chicken that light, crunchy coating. They crisp up beautifully in the air fryer and make the Kiev feel much more indulgent than it actually is.
Eggs. The glue that helps the breadcrumbs stick. Without them, your coating will have the structural integrity of wet tissue.
Flour. A light flour coating helps the egg cling to the chicken, giving you a better breadcrumb crust.
Paprika and Garlic Powder. These season the crumb so the outside isn’t just crunchy beige sadness. A little paprika gives colour, warmth and extra flavour.
Olive Oil Spray. Helps the breadcrumbs crisp and brown in the air fryer without needing lots of oil. Handy, simple, and far less terrifying than deep frying.
How to Make Air Fryer Chicken Kiev
Add the softened butter, minced garlic, chopped parsley, salt and black pepper to a plate or bowl. This is the glorious Kiev filling, also known as “the reason everyone suddenly appears in the kitchen”.
Mash everything together until you have a smooth, speckled garlic herb butter. Make sure the garlic and parsley are evenly mixed through so every Kiev gets the good stuff.
Spoon the garlic parsley butter onto a sheet of cling film. Shape it into a rough block or rectangle so it’s easier to portion later.
Wrap the butter tightly in the cling film and flatten it slightly. Place it in the freezer for around 20 minutes, until firm enough to slice.
Butterfly the chicken breasts by slicing them open horizontally, without cutting all the way through. Place them on a board and cover with cling film.
Gently bash the chicken breasts with a rolling pin or meat mallet until they’re an even thickness. Don’t go full Viking. You want thinner chicken, not chicken confetti.
Once flattened, remove the cling film. The chicken should be thin enough to fold around the butter but not so thin that it tears.
Unwrap the chilled butter and slice it into 4 even pieces. Each piece will become the hidden garlic butter centre of one Kiev.
Place one piece of garlic parsley butter in the centre of each butterflied chicken breast. Keep it away from the edges so it’s easier to seal.
Fold the chicken around the butter, tucking the sides in as much as possible. This helps trap the filling inside as it cooks.
Press the chicken firmly around the filling to create a neat parcel. Chill the stuffed chicken in the fridge for 15 minutes to help it hold its shape.
Add the panko breadcrumbs, paprika, garlic powder, salt and black pepper to a shallow bowl or plate.
Stir the breadcrumb mixture together until the spices are evenly distributed. This gives the coating colour, crunch and flavour instead of plain beige sadness.
Dip each stuffed chicken parcel into the flour, coating it all over. Shake off the excess so you don’t end up with a claggy coating.
Transfer the floured chicken into the beaten egg and coat it fully. The egg helps the breadcrumbs stick properly.
Move the chicken into the panko breadcrumb mixture and press the crumbs firmly onto the surface. Make sure the Kiev is coated all over, especially around the sealed edges.
Once coated, the chicken should be fully covered in crisp panko breadcrumbs. Give it a light spray with olive oil spray to help it turn golden in the air fryer.
Place the chicken Kievs in the air fryer basket, leaving space between them. Cook at 190°C for 15–18 minutes, turning halfway, until golden, crisp and cooked through. Rest for 5 minutes before serving so the garlic butter doesn’t immediately make a bid for freedom.
Serving & storage
To Store
Keep leftover Air Fryer Chicken Kiev in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Let it cool fully before storing, but don’t leave it sitting out for ages while everyone “just has one more bite”. That’s how leftovers mysteriously vanish.
To Reheat
Reheat in the air fryer at 180°C for 5–7 minutes, or until piping hot throughout. This helps bring the coating back to life better than the microwave, which can make the crumb go a bit soggy and emotionally defeated.
To freeze
You can freeze the cooked Kievs once cooled. Wrap them individually, then store in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. Reheat from defrosted in the air fryer at 180°C for 8–10 minutes, checking the centre is piping hot.
You can also freeze them uncooked after breading. Freeze on a tray first, then transfer to a bag or container. Cook from chilled/defrosted rather than rock-solid frozen for the best result and safest, most even cooking.

Variations & tips
Seal the chicken properly. Fold the chicken tightly around the butter and press the edges together well. The colder the butter, the better your chances of keeping it inside.
Chill before breading. That 15-minute fridge rest is not pointless faff. It helps the chicken hold its shape and reduces the chance of garlic butter escape attempts.
Add extra protein on the side. Serve with high-protein yoghurt coleslaw, cottage cheese mash, or a simple side salad with boiled eggs if you want to push the protein even higher.
Make it cheesier. Add a small amount of grated mozzarella or reduced-fat cheddar to the garlic butter filling. Not traditional, but neither is eating cereal straight from the box and we all survived that.
Use chicken mini fillets for Kiev bites. Smaller portions work well for kids or buffet-style meals. Just reduce the cooking time and check they’re cooked through.
Can I make this Air Fryer Chicken Kiev ahead of time?
Yes. You can stuff and bread the chicken earlier in the day, then keep it covered in the fridge until you’re ready to cook. This actually helps the coating set and makes the Kievs easier to handle.
How do I stop the garlic butter leaking out?
Make sure the butter is firm before stuffing, don’t overfill the chicken, and seal the edges as tightly as possible. Chilling the parcels before coating also helps. A tiny bit of leakage is normal, though. We call that chef’s tax.
Can I use chicken thighs instead of chicken breast?
Chicken thighs are harder to stuff neatly because they’re smaller and less uniform. Chicken breast is best for a classic Kiev shape, but you could use boneless thighs and roll them tightly if you’re happy with a more rustic version.
Is this recipe good for weight loss?
It can fit well into a weight-loss plan because it’s high in protein and portion-controlled. Serve it with plenty of vegetables or salad to keep the meal filling without turning it into a beige carb festival.
