Brazilian Picadillo, a vibrant and flavoursome dish, often overshadowed by its more famous cousin, chilli con carne, deserves a spotlight of its own.

Originating from Latin America and the Caribbean, picadillo is a rich, hearty, and slightly sweet stew that is as nutritious as it is delicious.

Unlike the often bean-laden chilli con carne, picadillo focuses on the harmonious blend of minced meat, sweet raisins, and salty olives, creating a unique balance of flavours.

Its versatility is notable, too, as it can be served with rice, used as a filling for tacos, or even as a standalone dish.

This particular picadillo recipe is tailored for health-conscious food lovers who want to enjoy a high protein recipe boasting a balanced nutritional profile without compromising on taste.

With a preparation time of only 10 minutes and a cooking duration of 50 minutes, it serves up to 6 people, making it perfect for family dinners or meal prepping for the week ahead.

Each serving contains approximately 375 calories, with a well-rounded macronutrient distribution of 44g protein, 25g carbohydrates, and a modest 11g of fat.

What is Beef Picadillo?

Brazilian Picadillo is a comforting, spiced stew made with beef mince, tomatoes, and a mix of sweet and savoury ingredients like raisins and olives.

Originating in Latin America, this dish is the ultimate chilli con carne alternative. While variations exist, Brazilian Picadillo stands out for its warm spices like cinnamon and cloves, giving it a unique twist. Traditionally served with rice or even tucked into empanadas, it’s versatile, satisfying, and utterly addictive.

Picadillo Main Ingredients

A top-down view of fresh ingredients for Brazilian picadillo, including chopped onions, green peppers, spices, beef mince, olives, raisins, and tinned tomatoes.

Cinnamon: A teaspoon of cinnamon contributes a warm, woody aroma and a sweet-spicy taste, which is surprisingly delightful in savoury dishes.

Smoked Paprika: Smoked paprika, also a teaspoon, imparts a rich, smoky flavour that elevates the picadillo's complexity.

Cumin: Half a teaspoon of cumin adds an earthy, slightly bitter essence that is a staple in many spice blends.

Salt: Half a teaspoon of salt is crucial for enhancing all the other flavours in the dish.

Ground Cloves: Another half teaspoon of ground cloves offers a sweet, aromatic intensity that pairs well with the cinnamon.

Chilli Powder: Half a teaspoon of chilli powder introduces a gentle heat, which you can adjust according to your preference.

Black Pepper: Likewise, half a teaspoon of black pepper adds a subtle heat and sharpness.

Lean Beef Mince: 800g of lean beef mince is the protein powerhouse of this dish, you could use turkey mince or pork mince if you prefer.

Raisins: 75g of raisins bring a delightful sweetness and textural contrast to the picadillo.

Olives: 100g of sliced green or black olives contribute a briny depth and a burst of flavour with every bite.

Picadillo is a traditional dish made across Latin America. Most picadillo recipes have a base of beef mince and chopped tomatoes and the other ingredients vary depending on which country you're in. In this version you'll discover some amazing warming flavours from the cinnamon and cloves which are included in the spice mix. There is sweetness from the raisins which is countered by a savoury edge thanks to the olives and capers.

It's a dish quite unlike anything you will have tasted before but because it's very easy to make, it’s scalable and it has good macros, it is a dish you'll definitely want to cook again.

  • Total Time: 1 hour
  • Yield: 6 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 1 tbsp oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 20 g garlic, chopped
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp chilli powder
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 800 g lean beef mince
  • 75 g raisins
  • 100 g green or black olives, sliced
  • 800 g chopped tomatoes
  • 30 ml white wine vinegar

Instructions

Heat some oil in a pan and fry the onions and pepper until they start to soften. You want them golden, not burnt—this isn’t a barbecue.

Throw in the garlic and all those gorgeous spices. Give it a minute to get fragrant. This is when people in the house start appearing, asking what’s for dinner.

Add the beef mince and brown it off. Break it up with a spoon. No one likes mystery meat lumps.

Now, in go the raisins, olives, chopped tomatoes, and vinegar. Give everything a good mix, slap a lid on, and let it do its thing.

Simmer on low for 40 minutes until the sauce is thick and beautiful. Basically, let it sit while you pretend to be busy.

Serve with rice, tacos, or straight from the pan. No wrong answers here.

Absolutely! This version is made with lean beef mince, loads of veggies, and wholesome ingredients. It’s a delicious way to sneak in some nutrients while still indulging.

Can I use pork mince instead?

Yes, you can! It’s a tasty alternative carne option, though it’ll have a slightly sweeter flavour.

What makes Brazilian Picadillo different from other versions?

The use of warm spices like cinnamon and cloves, combined with the sweet-savory contrast of raisins and olives, gives it a uniquely Brazilian twist.

Can I freeze Brazilian Picadillo?

Definitely! Pop it in an airtight container, and it’ll keep for up to three months. Perfect for when you need an easy dinner.

Is it an alternative to chilli con carne?

Yes! Think of it as chilli con carne’s Latin cousin – a bit sweeter, a bit spicier, and a whole lot sassier.

What can I serve with it?

Rice is the classic choice, but mashed potatoes, quinoa, or even crusty bread work beautifully.

Can I make Brazilian picadillo vegetarian?

Swap the beef for lentils or plant-based mince, and you’ve got a veggie version of this classic.

Why are there raisins in Brazilian picadillo?
