Alright, folks, buckle up because I've got a doozie of a recipe for you.

It's meaty, it's cheesy, it's saucy, and it's got pizza lovers and carnivores alike saying, "gimme some of that." Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce you to the Meatza!

Meatza: The Origins

photo of sliced meatza

So, where did this meaty marvel come from?

Well, it's a bit like the superhero of the food world - born in the USA, home of the brave, the free, and the food innovators.

The Meatza is a relatively new kid on the block, riding the wave of low-carb, high-protein diets. But let's be honest, it's also just a fantastic excuse to combine two of our greatest loves: meat and pizza.

Now, the beauty of the Meatza is that it's a bit of a chameleon. It can change its toppings to suit its mood (or more accurately, your mood).

The basic recipe is simple: a meat base (usually a hearty mix of pork mince and beef mince), topped with pizza sauce, cheese, and whatever your heart desires.

Want to keep it classic? Go for peppers and onions. Feeling a bit adventurous? How about some pineapple or jalapenos? The world is your Meatza-topping oyster!

The Meatza Key Ingredients

ingredients for how to make a meatza

Pork Mince. This is half of the meat base in the Meatza. Pork mince is flavorful and juicy, contributing to the overall savoury taste and texture of the dish.

Beef Mince. The other half of the meat base, beef mince adds a robust, hearty flavour that complements the pork. It's also high in protein, making the Meatza a great choice for those following a high-protein diet.

Egg. The egg acts as a binding agent in the meat base, helping to hold the pork and beef mince together. It also adds a bit of richness to the flavour profile.

Oats. Oats are another binding agent used in the meat base. They help to absorb any excess moisture and keep the base firm and sliceable, much like a traditional pizza crust.

Bacon Medallions. These are used as a topping in the Meatza. They add a smoky, salty flavour that pairs perfectly with the cheese and other toppings. Plus, who doesn't love bacon on their pizza?

Pizza Topping Sauce. This is the traditional sauce used on pizzas, and it's used here to maintain that authentic pizza flavour. It adds a tangy, slightly sweet element that ties all the other ingredients together.

Lighter Cheddar Cheese. Cheese is a must on any pizza, and the Meatza is no exception. The lighter cheddar cheese provides that classic, melty pizza topping we all love, while keeping the dish on the healthier side.

Join the Meatza movement! A delicious, high-protein twist on traditional pizza that's sure to tantalize your taste buds.

  • Total Time: 45 mins
  • Yield: 8 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 500 g pork mince
  • 500 g beef mince
  • 1 egg
  • 50 g oats
  • 1 tbsp mixed herbs
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 green pepper, chopped
  • 1 red pepper, chopped
  • 6 bacon medallions, chopped
  • 50 g pizza topping sauce
  • 50 g lighter cheddar cheese
  • Salt to taste

Instructions

To make the Meatza you'll need pre-heat an oven to 230 degrees Celsius.

Heat 1 tsp of oil in a frying pan on a medium heat and fry one of the onions.

Once cooked add the cooked onion to a large mixing bowl along with the pork mince, beef mince, egg, oats and half of the mixed herbs and season with salt. Get your hands in and make sure it's all nicely mushed together.

Flatten out the meat mixture on a baking tray so it covers the tray and is around 2-3cm thick then place the Meatza base in the oven for around 15 Minutes until the juices run clear and it's cooked through.

While the base is cooking, heat the second tsp of olive oil in a large frying pan on medium heat and cook the second onion, peppers and bacon medallions for 5 to 10 minutes until cooked through. Once done, set aside.

Remove the Meatza base from the oven, drain any liquid if necessary then cover it with the tomato pizza sauce and spread it out, just like you would on any normal pizza.

Add the cooked bacon, onions and peppers on top, scatter the mixed herbs then sprinkle a thin layer of the cheese over everything then place under a grill for 5 ninutes for the cheese to melt before serving.

Meatza Storage Tips

To Store

The final dish keeps well in the fridge in an air-tight container. It's great to eat cold the next day in a sandwich or chopped up into a salad.

To Reheat

Place the dish in the microwave, covered and zap until fully heated throughout.

To Freeze

The final dish doesn't freeze well. You could freeze the base (before cooking) then defrost and cook when you're ready to eat it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

meatza, meatzza, giant burger

Is Meatza suitable for a keto diet?

Meatza is suitable for a ketogenic diet if you removed the oats from the base mixture and perhaps used a lower carbohydrate vegetable instead of the pepper topping. However, I am not a fan of the keto diet (read why here) and there are many other better options if the goal is weight loss.

Can I use other types of meat for the base?

Absolutely! While the traditional Meatza recipe uses a mix of pork and beef mince, you can experiment with other types of meat. Chicken or turkey mince could be used as a leaner option, or you could even try a vegetarian version with plant-based mince.

Can I add other toppings to my Meatza?

Of course! The beauty of Meatza is its versatility. Feel free to add any toppings you like. From traditional pizza toppings like mushrooms and olives to more unconventional choices like pineapple or jalapenos, the possibilities are endless.
