If your dinners have been stuck in a beige rut, this Jamaican pepper steak is your official escape plan.

Side angle of Jamaican pepper steak in a bowl, highlighting the thick sauce clinging to the beef and peppers, with green onion garnish.

It’s fast, fiery, and absolutely loaded with flavour, but still ticks the high-protein box nicely.

We’re talking around 35 g protein per serving, roughly 270–300 calories, with lean beef steak doing the heavy lifting.

This is a proper quick stir-fry — no slow marinating drama, no obscure ingredients, no pretending you’ve got all evening.

Just a wok (or big pan), ten minutes of chopping, and another ten minutes of cooking.

The jerk seasoning brings heat and smoky depth, the honey balances things out, and the peppers keep everything fresh and crunchy.

It’s ideal for busy weeknights, post-gym dinners, or when you want something exciting without ordering a takeaway and wondering why you feel robbed afterwards.

Key Ingredients

Flat lay of Jamaican pepper steak ingredients arranged on a wooden surface, including sliced beef, chopped peppers, spring onions, soy sauce, jerk seasoning, garlic, ginger, honey, cornflour, and red chilli.

Beef Steak. The star of the show. Go for something tender, like sirloin or rump, so it stays juicy and delicious.

Cornflour. The secret weapon for a silky Jamaican Pepper Steak sauce. It thickens things up just enough to make everything glossy and delicious.

Reduced-Salt Soy Sauce. Adds a deep, savoury umami flavour while keeping things from getting too salty. Because we’re fancy like that.

Water. Yep, plain old water. It helps create the perfect saucy consistency. Hydration is key—even for your food.

Jamaican Jerk Seasoning. The magic dust that makes this dish sing. It’s spicy, smoky, herby, and everything good in life.

Honey. A little sweetness to balance out the spice. Plus, it helps the beef caramelise beautifully when stir-fried.

Spring Onions. A mild, slightly sweet onion flavour that lifts everything up. Also great for making your dish look restaurant-level fancy.

Red & Green Peppers. Crunchy, colourful, and essential for that classic pepper steak look. Because we eat with our eyes first.

Red Chilli. For that extra heat kick. If you like things extra spicy, throw in another. If you're a spice wimp, maybe halve it.

Garlic. Because no dish should exist without garlic. End of discussion.

Ginger. Spicy, warming, and a little zingy. Basically, the life of the party.

Bring the heat with this Jamaican pepper steak recipe! Spicy, high-protein, and ready in under 30 minutes.

  • Total Time: 20 mins
  • Yield: 3 1x

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 400g beef steak, cubed
  • 1 tsp cornflour
  • 30 ml reduced-salt soy sauce
  • 80 ml water
  • 1 tbsp Jamaican jerk seasoning
  • 1 tbsp honey
  • 1 tsp oil
  • 3 spring onions, chopped
  • 1/2 red pepper, cubed
  • 1/2 green pepper, cubed
  • 1 red chilli, sliced
  • 10 g garlic, crushed
  • 10 g ginger, crushed

Instructions

Start by slicing your beef steak into thin strips. Pop it into a bowl and coat it with cornflour, soy sauce, water, jerk seasoning, and honey. Give it a good mix—like you're dressing a salad, but way more delicious.

Heat a large pan or wok over medium-high heat. Add a little oil, then toss in the spring onions and peppers. Let them sizzle for about 5 minutes until they start to soften but still have some crunch.

Now, add the garlic, ginger, and chilli. The smell? Incredible.

Time for the beef. Toss it in, keeping the marinade aside for now. Stir-fry for a few minutes until the beef is browned and smelling amazing.

Pour in the reserved marinade, stir everything together, and let it cook for a couple more minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.

Remove from the heat and serve up hot with steamed rice. Maybe garnish with a bit of fresh coriander if you’re feeling fancy.

Storage & Reheating Instructions

Plated Jamaican pepper steak in a blue bowl, featuring tender beef, red and green peppers, and a glossy jerk-spiced sauce, garnished with fresh spring onions and coriander.

Fridge

Got leftovers? Pop them in an airtight container and store in the fridge for up to 3 days. The flavours get even better overnight, so future-you will thank you.

Freezer

You can freeze Jamaican pepper steak for up to 3 months. Just make sure it’s in a sealed container or freezer bag to avoid icy disappointment. Defrost in the fridge overnight before reheating.

Reheating

Warm it up in a pan over medium heat with a splash of water to loosen the sauce. Microwave? Sure, but stir halfway through to avoid weird hot-and-cold spots.

Serving Suggestions

  • Steamed basmati or jasmine rice

  • Cauliflower rice for a lower-carb option

  • Stir-fried greens or sugar snap peas

  • Stuffed into wraps for a next-day lunch win

Jamaican Pepper Steak FAQs

Can I use chicken instead of beef?

Absolutely! Just swap the beef for chicken breast or thigh and follow the same steps. The flavours will still be banging.

How spicy is Jamaican pepper steak?

It depends on how much chilli and jerk seasoning you use! If you're spice-shy, go easy on the chilli. If you love the burn, go all in.

What’s the best cut of beef for Jamaican pepper steak?

Something tender, like sirloin, rump, or even fillet if you’re feeling posh. Avoid tough cuts unless you fancy a jaw workout.

What should I serve with Jamaican Pepper Steak?

Rice is the classic choice. But if you're dodging carbs, try cauliflower rice or stir-fried greens.

Can I make it less salty?

Yes—use low-sodium soy sauce and reduce the jerk seasoning if needed.

Can I add more veggies?

Go for it! Mushrooms, carrots, or even baby corn would be great in this Jamaican Pepper Steak.

How do I thicken the sauce more?

Mix a tiny bit more cornflour with a splash of water, then stir it into the pan. Magic.
