This inconspicuous gadget, snugly sitting on your finger, dives deep into three realms of your daily life: sleep, readiness, and activity.
While the ring prides itself on being a well-rounded wellness companion, my intrigue was predominantly tethered to its ability to dissect the mysteries of my sleep.
The quest for better sleep led me to don the Oura Ring 3 for a span of 30 days, embarking on a journey to unearth what insights this tiny titan holds.
In this article, I’ll share my dalliance with the Oura Ring 3, focusing chiefly on its sleep tracking prowess, while also shedding light on its readiness and activity tracking facets.
I. Mastering Sleep Quality: Oura Ring's Nightly Analysis

This was the main reason I wanted to try the ring - to give me some quantifiable data about my sleep.
Having just blasted through Matthew Walker's - Why We Sleep book, I was keen to see what was actually happening once I closed my eyes.
My usual pre-bed routine is to do some yoga, hit the sauna for 20 minutes, go to bed and then read.
I mean sleep is not just about shutting your eyes and drifting into oblivion. It's a complex ballet of brainwaves and bodily functions. The Oura Ring 3 takes a front-row seat and keeps a meticulous record. Here’s how it breaks down the nocturnal narrative:
In-Depth Overview
The Oura Ring 3 segments your sleep into three acts - REM (Rapid Eye Movement), Light Sleep, and Deep Sleep.
REM Sleep: This is when your brain gets creative and dreams flourish. It's a crucial phase for memory consolidation and mood regulation.
Light Sleep: The opening act of your nightly show where your body and mind slow down, but you're not too deep into the dreamland yet.
Deep Sleep: The hero of restoration. During this phase, your body goes into repair mode, healing muscles and tissues, and bolstering the immune system.
Precision and Insights

Alongside tracking these sleep stages, Oura keeps tabs on your Time in Bed and Total Sleep Time, distinguishing between the time spent tossing around and the time you were actually asleep.
It also monitors your Resting Heart Rate throughout the night, which is a good indicator of your cardiovascular health and overall recovery.
The Onset of Sleep feature lets you know how long it took for you to cross over into dreamland after hitting the bed. For me, it was a reality check on nights I thought I dozed off quickly.
The culmination of all this data results in a Sleep Score out of 100, giving you a straightforward insight into your sleep quality. It’s like getting a report card, but for your snoozing skills.
It actually matched up to my perception on whether I had a good sleep or not. Generally speaking, on nights when I thought I had a poor sleep and didn't wake up refreshed, my sleep score was low. Conversely, when I woke up feeling spritely and ready to get on with my day, my sleep score was higher.
User Experience Evaluated
The app does a stellar job in presenting all of the above information in a digestible format. It's not just a data dump; it’s a well-organized, easy-to-interpret insight into your nightly escapades.
You can just look at your overall sleep score, or you can go into each section and see what was happening and compare it to previous nights etc.
Comparative Device Analysis
Here's the kicker, I'd never tracked my sleep before because I don't want to have something on my wrist when going to sleep.
That was one of the standouts of the ring. I already had a wedding band on my left hand when sleeping so having a ring on my index finger was far more comfortable compared to a thick watch strap
II. Evaluating Daily Readiness: Oura's Innovative Score

The readiness score is akin to a daily wellness fortune-teller, albeit based on real data and not whimsical crystal ball gazing.
Simmilar to the sleep score, it t gauges how ready your body is to take on the challenges of the day, giving you a score out of 100.
The readiness score is a culmination of several metrics that the Oura Ring 3 keeps an eye on.
Monitoring Body Temperature
One of the key metrics it monitors is your Body Temperature. A deviation from your norm could be an early indicator of an illness brewing.
In my case, the ring flagged a temperature spike, acting like a modern-day digital canary in a coal mine, warning me of an impending cold before I even sneezed.
You can see the data above, on the +2.7 day I was floored, in bed, with a fever and feeling rotten.
Recovery Assessment
The readiness score takes into account your sleep quality from the previous night and the activities from the previous day.
Based on this assessment, it nudges you on whether it's a good day to push through a rigorous workout or take it easy with a restorative yoga session.
It’s not shy about suggesting a rest day if that’s what you need for optimal recovery.
Practical Benefits
The readiness score acted as a daily compass, helping me tailor my activities based on how well-recovered my body was. It was particularly handy in preempting an illness, allowing me to ease up on my routine and focus on rest.
The more 'holistic' (I hate this word usually) nature of the readiness score sets it apart from similar metrics in other devices. It’s not just a reflection of a single aspect of your health, but a well-rounded view that takes multiple factors into account.
Obviously the main detereminant of how you feel is you, it's your own opinion.
However, having some data to help make the decision on if and how hard you should train that day, was a benefit that I found helpful.
III. Daily Activity Insights with Oura Ring
The Oura Ring 3 doesn’t just stop at monitoring your slumber; it tracks your waking hours too.
However, in my case, during the day, I predominatly used the data from my Apple Watch. Yet, the Oura Ring still had a role to play.
If you don't have a wearable on your wrist, the Oura ring can provide you with plenty of handy data.
The Oura Ring 3 is equipped to track your steps, monitor your workout sessions, and estimate your calorie burn.
Accurate Step Counting
The main one, obviously is that the Oura Ring does a commendable job at tracking steps. It’s unobtrusive, light, and if you’re someone who isn’t keen on sporting a wrist wearable, this could be your go-to step tracker.
I did run this simmiultaounsly to my Apple Watch and found that Oura did seem to overestimate step count, probably because there would be more movement coming from subtle finger movements compared to the motion sensors from the watch on my writs.
Exercise Tracking Simplified
I never used this feature but it does provide a basic overview of your activity levels and can track workouts which for many, could be enough to stay on top of their fitness game.
Caloric Burn Estimation
By keeping tabs on your activity, the Oura Ring churns out an estimated calorie burn. It’s not going to give you a play-by-play account, but it provides a ballpark figure that could be useful for those keen on maintaining a calorie deficit or surplus.
The app presents your activity data in a clean, straightforward manner. It’s not inundated with graphs and charts, but provides a clear view of your steps, workout activity, and calorie burn.
It’s simplicity could be a breath of fresh air for those overwhelmed by the data deluge from other fitness trackers.
My daily grind was majorly chronicled by the Apple Watch, but the Oura Ring 3 holds its ground as a simpler, more discreet activity tracker. It’s like comparing a diligent scribe to a boisterous town crier; both get the message across, but in markedly different manners.
IV. Purchasing the Oura Ring in the UK
Up until recently, you couldn't get the Oura ring in the UK unless you bought it direct from their US website.
However, just recently Oura have now opened up a shop on Amazon so you can get one really quickly and easily.
In this case, the quest for wellness often begins with a simple click on to Amazon pick your ring and get stared.
Style and Design Choices

The Oura Ring 3 isn’t a one-size-fits-all affair; it lets you choose a shape that resonates with your aesthetic. The ring comes in two distinct styles: Heritage and Horizon.
The Heritage style sports a classic, flat-top design reminiscent of a signet ring, blending tradition with modern tech.
On the other hand, the Horizon which I went for style boasts a sleek, rounded design for a modern, minimalist appeal.
Once you've picked a style, it's time to adorn it with a finish that suits your fancy.
There are quite a few options like gold, silver, rose gold or stealth which is the one I have.
Sizing and Initial Setup

Once your order is placed, Oura dispatches a sizing kit to your doorstep before sending over the actual ring.
This kit is a treasure trove of plastic rings encompassing all the sizes Oura offers ensuring the ring you receive isn’t just a wellness companion, but a comfortable fit.
Once you've selected your ideal size, a few more clicks on the Oura website, and you're on the final leg of the setup journey.
I thought this was pretty cool, instead of just sending a bit of paper or asking you to measure your dinger yourself.
It also allowed me to try different sizes on different figures to see what was most comfortable.
In the end, it was my right hand index fingure. I tried to go for the middle finger on my right hand but I found when using a computer mouse it wasn't comfortable.
Final Thoughts

My 30-day rendezvous with the Oura Ring 3 turned out to be an enlightening expedition into the realms of sleep, readiness, and activity.
The ring seamlessly blended into my daily routine, becoming a silent yet insightful companion.
The star of the show, without a doubt, has been the sleep tracking feature.
The tangible data and the nightly sleep score turned out to be the gentle nudge I needed to hit the hay earlier. It’s fascinating how a piece of tech could instigate a lifestyle tweak.
The readiness and activity tracking features, though not my primary focus, were helpful. They provided a more holistic view of my day-to-day wellness, intertwining with the sleep data to create a comprehensive picture.
The aesthetics and the non-intrusive design of the ring are a breath of fresh air in a market flooded with wrist-bound gadgets.
It's discreet, stylish, and doesn’t scream “I’m tracking my steps” with every gesture. Share on X
When it comes to the price tag, the Oura Ring 3 is a premium piece, but the wealth of insights and the subtle nudge towards a healthier lifestyle justify the investment.
It’s a blend of minimalist design and maximalist insights, which to me, strikes a perfect balance.
In a landscape where wrist wearables reign supreme, the Oura Ring 3 emerges as a compelling alternative.
It's not just a ring; it's a wellness companion that nudges you gently towards better health without being overbearing.
For those wary of wrist wearables or anyone on a quest to unravel the mysteries of sleep, the Oura Ring 3 is a worthy contender to consider. The journey from curious skepticism to appreciative adoption has been rewarding, making the Oura Ring 3 a cherished part of my wellness toolkit.
