The Top 10 Best Tasting Protein Bars Of 2017

FacebookTwitterPinterestShare

Traditionally protein bars were one of those foul tasting snacks that big dudes in the gym force fed themselves in the quest for muscle gains. They were solid, tough, nasty, tasted terrible and were extortionately priced.

Thankfully, times have changed and all of the big supplement companies are in a race to develop the tastiest, softest, range of best tasting protein bars out there. What’s more, they’re no longer seen as a snack for bodybuilders but a welcome addition to the meal plan of any health conscious individual.

One man has been eating his way through pretty much every protein bar on the market and in this article, Harry Ranson picks out his top 10 protein bars out of over 100 that he’s tried! Here are his top 10 best tasting protein bars….

Grenade, Carb Killer: White Chocolate

grenade carb killa review

Grenade bars really took the protein bar world by storm with this one and they have quickly built up a reputation as some of the best tasting protein bars on the market.

In my opinion, they`re not quite the best but they are certainly up there. If someone has never tried protein bars before then I`ll recommend these; they`re widely available, have decent macros and aren`t too far removed from a bar that non fitness folk are typically used to.

Oh Yeah, One Bar: Maple Glazed Doughnut

Oh Yeah have had a crack at a couple of different protein bar concepts, original, vicotry (which narrowly missed out on this list) and now the ONE bars. Named as such because of the 1 gram of sugar in each bar.

It`s worth bearing in mind however that the macros are still very similar to other protein bars so doesn`t automatically make this one any “healthier” per se but if you are watching your sugar intake, this one is for you.

I singled out the Maple Glazed Doughny as it is excellent but truth be told all of their bars are very good. Unlike grenade where many of the bars taste similar. Oh Yeah`s ONE bars have a very distinctive taste and a nice iced coating around each one.

BSN, Syntha 6 Crisp: Salted Caramel

Imagine a rice krispie square, a little more condensed, a little less gooey dipped in a flavoured yogurt coating and you`ll have a Syntha 6 Crisp.

Buy one and you won`t regret it.

These are relatively new to the market and it`s great to see companies diversifying into different variations of sweet treats. The difference in texture to a traditional protein bar is more than welcome and puts it high on my protein treats list.

ProSupps, MyBar

Ovenbaked is the ProSupps bar USP and it makes a huge difference. You may have found some protein bars are a little chewy or stay around a little too long in the mouth but not these.

They are super soft, almost cake like and the flavours are pretty unique (Ice Cream Cookie Crunch anyone?).

The macros are good too, delivering 20g of protein and only 220 calories which makes it one of the lower calorie options on the list.

MusclePharm, Combat Crunch: Cinnamon Twist

Unlike the ProSupps bars above, these ARE chewy but I don`t think that is necessarily a good or a bad thing, it all depends on what you like.

Sometimes when I`m super hungry I`ll prefer a harder bar as it will fill me up more and last a bit longer which will leave me more satisfied.

Before you think I`m trying to talk up a horrible chewy bar these things taste GREAT. The all have amazing coatings and a huge variety of flavours to suit any palette, highly recommended.

Clif Bar, Builder’s Bar: Crunchy Peanut Butter

Not a brand you hear of much in the supplement world so perhaps not the most popular but they have an absolute corker of a protein bar.

Kind of a mix between a protein bar and a rice krispie square with some amazing flavours.

Calories are a little on the high side for a protein bar but it`s relatively substantial and all the flavours are very good.

Oatein, Flapjack: Cherry Bakewell

I think I included these more for nostalgia than anything. Following lunch with one of these reminds me of being back at school without a care in the world (and usually with ripped trousers from playing football).

The flavour of these is really true to taste, which is something that can`t be said about a lot of protein treats. It`s more of a flapjack than protein bar so it`s slightly higher in carbs but flavour and texture are spot on.

Texture: 7.5/10

Oh Yeah Bar: Caramel Candies

At what point does a protein bar become a chocolate bar?

At over 350 calories and 15g of fat, these things pack a serious calorie punch. It`s not really surprising considering it is loaded with chocolate and covered in smarties with a small protein bar hiding in there somewhere.

The protein bar element is so so but the chocolate coating is awesome. Not something I`d be having if I was dieting but something that will leave you a little less guilty when gaining.

Optimum Nutrition, Cake Bites: Red Velvet *BEST TASTING PROTEIN BAR*

What`s better than 1 protein bar? Well 3 of course! Before you get excited, these are effectively 3 small protein “bites” which combined, are around the same size as a normal protein bar.

These little things are incredible though. Kind of cakey, kind of fudgey but a texture and flavour that is like nothing other.

In the same way that quest and grenade redefined protein bars, I feel these are taking it to the next level.

Texture: 9/10

Value for Money: 8.5/10

Quest Nutrition, Quest Bar: Cookies and Cream

These are like the rich teas of the protein bar world and took protein bars from “gotta get my protein in bro” to “I actually want to eat this protein bar”.

Reasonably priced, good macros and good flavour. They aren`t quite as exciting any more and many other protein bars have surpassed these in terms of texture and flavour but one of these in the microwave for 10 seconds will still hit the spot.

Taste: 7.5/10

Texture: 7.5/10

Value for Money: 8/10
